Direi Carnera, ma qualcosa mi sfugge, ne sono certo. Certamente non sono stati quei grandissimi pugili che rispondevano ai nomi di Saverio Turiello, Cleto Locatelli, Vittorio Tamagnini... e allora???

Molto prima di Johnny Dundee... credo che questa cosa non la sapesse veramente nessuno... stiamo parlando del 1894 e la cosa è registrata anche a Canastota (che naturalmente non sa nulla della storia italiana in questione)... e il pugile in questione è italiano di nascita e probabilmente (il probabilmente è d'obbligo, è ovvio) cittadino italiano sui documenti.

Forse, caro Lamberto, si potrebbe riscrivere la storia... dico "forse" perché ci potrebbero essere smentite anagrafiche sulla reale cittadinanza italiana al momento del (dei più di uno) match in questione (cosa difficile, visto l'epoca) di "the Sicilian Swordfish", il Pesce Spada Siciliano, nato a Palermo l'8 Dicembre 1872... per ora risulta italiano... staremo a vedere... prossimo indizio la categoria di peso, e dopo ricerche varie ci arriviamo tutti...

Allora... La storia dei pesi gallo, negli albi del Lineal Boxing World Champion, ci racconta che il primo campione del mondo della categoria fu Jimmy Barry nel 1894... nel 1891 George “Little Chocolate” Dixon (più volte campione del mondo dei piuma tra il 1891 e il 1900) era stato dichiarato campione delle 114 libbre, ma la categoria dei gallo alle attuali 118 libbre e chiamata allora anche paperweight, non era stata ufficialmente istituita. Jimmy Barry, che ha combattuto tra il 1890 e il 1899 terminando la carriera imbattuto e inserito nella International Boxing Hall of Fame di Canastota nel 1990 nella sezione Old Timer, rivendicò il titolo dei gallo e fu “ufficialmente” (tra virgolette) dichiarato tale grazie al successo per KO al ventottesimo round su Casper Leon, a Lamont in California il 15 Settembre 1894. Questi in realtà si chiamava Gaspare Leoni ed era nato a Palermo l’8 Dicembre 1872, ed era soprannominato Sicilian Swordfish… Pesce Spada Siciliano. Gaspare Leoni sembra (il sembra è d’obbligo) avesse mantenuto la cittadinanza italiana. Gaspare Leone chiuderà la sua carriera sul ring con un record, nientemale per il periodo, di 43-15-24, 14 KO.

Certo è una bella scoperta. Forse ce ne sono stati anche altri. Anni fa The Ring Magazine fece una classifica dei migliori pugili italiani della storia e il primo in classifica fu Johnny Dundee, non citarono nemmeno Locatelli e gli scrissi una lettera in merito che fu pubblicata. Difficile però considerare italiano un pugile che non ha mai combattuto nel nostro Paese. Anche Arturo Gatti, come Johnny Dundee, era nato in Italia ma nessuno lo ha mai considerato italiano. Forse era più italiano Marciano che era nato negli Stati Uniti.

Un saluto a te Paolant ed a tutti gli appassionati/e di Boxe. Anche se non scrivevo da molto vi leggo spesso, ma per vari motivi vedo meno Pugilato di quanto vorrei. Anche io avrei risposto Oddone Piazza ragionandoci un po': anche se il primo italiano ad arrivare vicino alla conquista del titolo mondiale, nei pesi gallo, fu Domenico Bernasconi, che contro il leggendario Al Brown fu dichiarato vincitore inizialmente per squalifica del panamense a causa di reiterati colpi bassi, ma a causa di un fraintendimento dell'arbitro con il manager dell' italiano che non parlava inglese, praticamente quest'ultimo accetto la decisione di non squalificare più Brown, che poi vinse quell'incontro ai punti sui 15 round. Era il 19 marzo del '33, allora anche in piena età dell'oro del Pugilato potevano accadere anche queste ingiustizie. E grazie a te per la storia sul tentativo di Domenico Bernasconi che non conoscevo nei dettagli.
Comunque, D'Agata a parte, la categoria dei gallo ha parlato parecchio in italiano grazie agli "americani" Pete "Kid" Herman, siciliano di nascita e non di New Orleans come riportato nei documenti americani, Eddie "Cannonball" Martin, Bushy Graham, nato probabilmente ad Enna e non ad Utica, Tony Marino, Harry Jeffra e Lou Salica.
